Instructions – GI Bill

If you are unsure if you are eligible for the GI Bill, or if you need assistance applying for benefits, follow these instructions:

  1. Visit: http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/education_programs.asp to learn about the different GI Bill® programs available and to select which one is best for you before you begin the application process.  If you are still unsure after reading the information on the GI Bill website, you can call 1-888-442-4551 and press “0” to speak to a representative and they can assist you with making your selection.  You must know which one you are applying for before you begin the application process.


  1. Once you are ready to apply for the GI Bill, please visit: https://www.vets.gov/education/apply/#modal The application is free and online – which makes processing much faster.  You will need your service record and your bank account and routing number for setting up direct deposit.


  1. After you have completed the application, be advised that the VA averages 30 days to process applications.  If you are eligible, they will make you a Certificate of Eligibility stating which GI Bill you are eligible for, how many months of entitlement you have remaining, and when your benefits expire.  Send a copy of this Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to your school.
